Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is a landmark third-person action-adventure game released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996. Developed by LucasArts, it was a centerpiece of a massive multimedia project that bridged the narrative gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Instead of playing as a main cinematic hero, players control Dash Rendar, a cynical Corellian mercenary and smuggler. Armed with his trusty blaster and piloting his signature ship, the Outrider, Dash takes on mercenary contracts to help a desperate Rebel Alliance, protect a hiding Luke Skywalker, and rescue Han Solo from bounty hunters.

• Diverse Gameplay Styles: The game heavily experimented with early 3D mechanics. It seamlessly shifts between third-person shooter levels, jetpack navigation, first-person turret defense, and vehicle flight combat.
• The Iconic Hoth Opening: The game is legendary for its opening stage: the Battle of Hoth. Players pilot a Snowspeeder in a 3D environment, using a tow-cable mechanic to trip giant Imperial AT-AT walkers. This specific level heavily influenced the creation of the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series.
• The Multimedia Storyline: The plot runs parallel to the movies. It introduces Prince Xizor, the leader of the Black Sun crime syndicate, who attempts to gain Emperor Palpatine's favor by assassinating Luke Skywalker, placing him in direct conflict with Darth Vader.
