Gameboy Advance non-OEM reproduction Robopon 2 Cross Version game cartridge. Game cartridge comes with a plastic protective case.

Robopon 2: Cross Version is a monster-collecting role-playing video game developed by Red Company (RED Entertainment) and published by Atlus in North America on June 11, 2002, for the Game Boy Advance. Released alongside its counterpart, Ring Version, it serves as a direct sequel to the original Game Boy Color title. The game heavily subverts standard monster-catching mechanics by substituting organic creatures with customizable robots and gadgets.

Story & Premise

Following his victory in the first game, the young inventor Cody sets off to the new island of Majiko to compete for the Master rank. However, because he forgot to pack his previous roster of Robopon and subsequently wrecks his ship in a storm, he washes ashore empty-handed. Players must guide Cody as he builds a brand-new mechanical army, challenges regional champions, and explores a bizarre narrative packed with eccentric pop-culture references.

Core Gameplay & Mechanics

  • The "Sparking" System: Unlike Pokémon, players do not catch wild creatures in the field. Instead, new Robopon are built from scratch by finding and fusing different types of batteries—a crafting mechanic known as "sparking".
  • Party-Based Battles: The battle system functions as a four-on-four skirmish, allowing your entire active party to participate at the same time, making strict strategy and target prioritization necessary.
  • Robopon Classes: Robots are split into three central classifications:
    • Arm: Heavy offensive powerhouses capable of wielding traditional weaponry and software.
    • Move: High-speed mechanical units that also utilize weapons and customizable special moves.
    • Boot: Fast, sturdy units that rely solely on high baseline stats and natural abilities, balanced by an inability to equip weapons.

Cross Version vs. Ring Version Differences

While both cartridges follow the same main storyline, Cross Version acts as the more intensive alternative for veteran players:

  • Higher Difficulty: Features a much higher random encounter rate and tougher overall enemy trainer setups.
  • Class Distribution: Includes a higher concentration of powerful Boot-class Robopon.
  • Exclusives: Features version-exclusive components, starting options, and entirely different robot outcomes from the exact same battery fusion recipes.
