Quake II for the Nintendo 64 (N64) is a first-person shooter (FPS) released in 1999 that, while sharing a name with the PC classic, is a completely different game featuring unique level designs and assets.
Game Overview & Story
You play as a lone Space Marine (Special Operations) who is part of a desperate counter-offensive against the Strogg, a hostile race of cybernetic aliens on their home planet, Stroggos. After your squad is wiped out during a crash landing, you must navigate industrial environments to sabotage their war machine and eliminate the Strogg leader, the Makron.
Key Technical Features
- Original Content: Unlike a direct port, this version features 19 exclusive single-player levels and 10 unique multiplayer arenas designed specifically for the N64 hardware.
- Expansion Pak Support: Using the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak enables high-color depth, smoother framerates, and enhanced lighting effects.
- Visual Enhancements: The game includes real-time lighting, lens flares, and improved animated skyboxes/water compared to the original engine.
- Audio: Features a new dark ambient soundtrack composed by Aubrey Hodges (known for Doom 64), rather than the industrial metal of the PC version.
- Gameplay & Controls
- Arsenal: Includes 11 classic weapons like the Railgun and BFG, though weapon models are 2D sprites rather than 3D polygons to maintain performance.
- Movement Changes: Ducking and manual grenade throwing were removed, though the levels were specifically redesigned to accommodate these omissions.
- Multiplayer: Supports up to 4-player split-screen with modes like Deathmatch, Frag-Teams, Flag Wars (Capture the Flag), and Death Tag.
