Shonen Jump's One Piece is a 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up / platformer released exclusively in North America in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance. Developed by Dimps Corporation (known for Sonic Advance and Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure) and published by Bandai, the game serves as a loose adaptation of the anime's East Blue Saga.
Gameplay Mechanics
- Playable Character: You control Monkey D. Luffy as the sole playable protagonist, using his rubber-like "Gum-Gum" stretch abilities to fight enemies and swing through environments.
- Combat: Luffy utilizes a combination of short-range and long-range attacks. Landing hits builds up a multi-tiered Power Bar used to execute devastating ultimate finishers.
- Structure: The game spans 6 distinct worlds with 3 levels each (a standard introductory stage, an exploration-heavy stage, and a final boss fight). You fight through iconic locations including Romance Dawn, Orange Town, Syrup Village, the Baratie, Arlong Park, and Loguetown.
- Progression: Defeating bosses unlocks new special attacks and skills. Increasing your overall pirate bounty/score rewards you with health pool upgrades.
Features & Content
- Boss Fights: Features 12 primary bosses directly from the animated series, including Captain Morgan, Buggy, and Arlong.
- Straw Hat Crew: Though they aren't playable, other crew members (like Zoro, Nami, and Sanji) appear to assist Luffy with unique summonable abilities and finishers.
- Replayability: Stages feature branching paths, interactive items, and hidden treasures that require you to revisit areas with newly unlocked abilities.
4Kids Influence
Because it was localized during the era when 4Kids Entertainment held the anime license in the US, the game heavily reflects their specific edits:
- Zoro is strictly localized as "Zolo".
- Sanji’s collectible items are lollipops instead of cigarettes.
