Nintendo 64 non-OEM reproduction Bomberman Hero video game cartridge.

Bomberman Hero is a 3D action-platformer released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. Developed by A.I Co., Ltd. and published by Hudson Soft, it stands out as one of the most unique entries in the Bomberman franchise because it completely abandons the series' traditional top-down puzzle mechanics in favor of dedicated, linear platforming.

The Story

The plot kicks off when a mysterious spaceship crash-lands on Planet Bomber. While investigating, Bomberman meets a dazed pilot robot named Pibot. Pibot reveals that the evil Garaden Empire has attacked the planet Primus Star and kidnapped Princess Millian. To make matters worse, the empire is hunting for secret data disks, one of which Pibot managed to smuggle away. Bomberman vows to rescue the princess, embarking on a journey that takes him across 5 distinct planets.

Key Gameplay Features

  • True Platforming: Unlike previous games, Bomberman can actually jump, scale ledges, and throw bombs at airborne enemies. He also has a health bar, allowing him to take multiple hits before losing a life.
  • No Multiplayer: In a massive shift for the franchise, the game completely excludes multiplayer mode to focus entirely on a robust, single-player campaign.
  • Expansive Levels: The campaign features roughly 73 short, linear levels packed with hazards, pitfalls, and boss fights.
  • Vehicles and Companions: Throughout his quest, Bomberman utilizes unique traversal gear like the Bomber Copter and Bomber Marine, and reunites with his animal companion, Louie the rabbit.
  • Bomb Upgrades: Players can find items like Freeze Bombs, Salt Bombs, and Remote Control Bombs to alter their arsenal. Explosions create a realistic, orb-like blast radius rather than traditional grid-based fire lines.
