Urban Yeti! is an eccentric, top-down action-adventure game released exclusively for the Game Boy Advance on August 16, 2002. Developed by Cave Barn Studios and published by Telegames, the game has achieved cult status due to its incredibly bizarre premise, janky gameplay mechanics, and unique distribution history.
The Plot and Gameplay
The story follows a yeti living secretly among humans who ventures into a large, bustling city on a quest to find a female yeti mate.
- The Overworld: Borrowing its visual style from the early, overhead Grand Theft Auto games, you navigate the city from a top-down perspective. As you walk around, aggressive townspeople, stray animals, and police officers constantly attack you.
- The Missions: To progress, you must complete specific, erratic tasks. For example, the city features a toll bridge that costs $4 to cross. To earn the money, you have to find a newspaper, look through the classified ads, and get a job.
- Quirky Minigames: The game features four distinct minigames that must be completed to finish the story. These include:
- Yeti Frisbee/Discus: Participating in a competitive throwing tournament.
- Soup Kitchen Management: Working at a local restaurant ("Yeti Kingdom Of Eats") just for tips.
- Sewer Tubing: Floating down a "lazy sewer river" on a giant inner tube.
- Poultry Catching: Chasing and catching chickens/cats to offer to your prospective mate.
Distribution and Rarity
What makes Urban Yeti! uniquely infamous is its release. It was produced in extremely limited quantities and never made it to retail store shelves. Instead, it was sold almost exclusively in North America through late-night, MTV-style TV infomercials. Buyers had to call a toll-free number (1-877-GETYETI) or order it directly from Telegames' website.
Reception
Critically, the game is remembered as a fascinating "fever dream" rather than a technical masterpiece. Reviewers point out significant slowdowns because the GBA hardware struggled to process the pseudo-3D buildings. The hitboxes are notoriously frustrating, the navigation arrows point in random directions, and the combat is mostly ineffective, meaning your best strategy is often just to run away. However, its licensed audio system from Factor 5 provided surprisingly robust audio, and its sheer commitment to absolute silliness gives it an undeniable charm.
