Game Overview
- The Plot: The evil crime syndicate Neo Zeed has resurfaced under the leadership of the Shadow Master. Legendary ninja Joe Musashi must descend from the mountains to wipe out the threat once and for all.
- Gameplay Focus: Compared to its predecessor (The Revenge of Shinobi), Shinobi III places a much heavier emphasis on speed, acrobatics, and fluid movement over raw puzzle-platforming difficulty.
Advanced Ninja Toolkit
Players control Joe Musashi utilizing a versatile, responsive moveset mapped seamlessly to a standard 3-button controller:
- Movement: Joe can dash, jump-scale walls, hang from ceilings, and rope-walk across screens.
- Combat: Joe throws projectile shurikens at a distance and automatically switches to his katana for lethal close-quarters strikes. He can also perform an invincibility running-slash and a devastating aerial dive-kick.
- Defensive Blocking: Players can actively block oncoming projectiles at any time by holding down the attack button.
- Ninjutsu Magic: Four unique screen-clearing magical techniques can be deployed once per level to turn the tide of battle, including temporary invincibility and full-screen fire attacks.
Varied Level Design
The campaign spans 7 distinct, multi-stage zones with escalating challenges. While most stages feature traditional vertical and horizontal platforming, the game dynamically mixes up the pacing by putting Joe on the back of a galloping horse or a high-speed jet ski to fight enemies on the move.
