Advance Wars 2 Black Hole Rising is a turn-based tactical strategy game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. As the direct sequel to the acclaimed Advance Wars, it retains the core gameplay of commanding various military units on a grid-based battlefield to capture territory and defeat enemy forces.

Core Gameplay & Story

  • Objective: Players typically win by either destroying all enemy units or capturing the enemy's headquarters (HQ).
  • Story: Set in Macro Land, the game follows the Allied Nations as they unite to repel a massive invasion by the Black Hole Army, led by the villainous Sturm.
  • Commanding Officers (COs): Players choose from 19 unique COs, each with specialized strengths, weaknesses, and unique "CO Powers".

Key New Features

  • Super CO Powers: A significant addition where COs can charge a larger meter to unleash a more devastating version of their standard power.
  • New Units & Terrain:
    • Neotank: A powerful, high-cost armored unit.
    • Missile Silos: One-time-use terrain features that any infantry unit can launch to deal area-of-effect damage.
    • Pipelines: Impassable walls that can be breached by attacking specific "pipe seams".
  • Non-Linear Campaign: Unlike the first game, the campaign allows players to select missions across five continents in a more flexible order.

Game Modes

  • Campaign: The main story-driven mode.
  • War Room: Challenging standalone maps where players aim for high ranks against the AI.
  • Versus/Link Mode: Multiplayer for up to four players using "Pass-and-Play" (Hotseat) or a GBA Link Cable.
  • Design Room: A map editor that allows players to create and share their own custom battlefields.
